Civil Rights Anomaly

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was said to be a major force in the passing of California Proposition 8 which denies gay marriage. Why then has the church recently helped the passing of civil rights measures to the gay community here in Salt Lake City, Utah?

  3. (I think talking about religion is something to be careful especially if I’m not the part of religion and society. If there is something that any of you read this was offended that’s because of my poor English not because I don’t respect you.)
I’m glad that someone brought up this topic. I’m not a member of church, so I can’t say that this is an answer or the idea that I have about church is correct-I don't know much about LDS church. Recently, I’m teaching Korean at MTC as a volunteer. Since I’m not a member, it’s more like missionaries teaching me about church than me teaching Korean. It’s like I ask some random questions and they answer. The thing we talked about last Saturday was how the LDS church thinks about gay marriage.(I wonder if I’m not supposed to bring that up at MTC.) One of missionaries said that it’s not like the LDS church hates gays. He said that god loves everyone as a his child and gays are also the children of god. But gays are like being what god doesn’t want us to be. The answer of your question can be that there are two groups of LDS people with different idea about gays because I suppose that there would be two groups of LDS people who are extremely against gays or who really don’t care about them. But what I think from your question and the conversation that I had with missionaries is that even though the church is against gay marriage that doesn’t mean that they don’t consider gays as humans. I mean, accepting gay marriage and protecting gays’ civil rights are totally different subjects. For LDS church, accepting gay marriage can be considered that the church is not against gays and recommend gay marriage. So, they need to deny that to keep the god’s word. However, the civil rights of gays is the thing that’s supposed to be protected as a human. As the church which believes that we are children of god and god loves us without any conditions, I think denying the rights of gays can be denying of the word of god as well.
